Farleigh marks 20th anniversary with opening of atrium

On Tuesday 23 June, we officially opened our new atrium and celebrated 20 years at North Court Road in Broomfield.

Farleigh Hospice has been providing compassionate care and support to adults living with life-limiting illnesses and their families across mid Essex for 44 years. This takes place in our patients’ homes and at our hospice, which was in New London Road in Chelmsford before we moved to our purpose-built building in Broomfield in 2006.

Our hospice at North Court Road has a range of specialist facilities, including an Inpatient Unit where patients receive around-the-clock expert care, counselling rooms and a physiotherapy gym plus a peaceful sanctuary room.

Improvements to our hospice

Farleigh had been given a government grant for capital expenditure, which we could only spend on improvements to our buildings, equipment and infrastructure, not directly on patient care.

We have used these funds to convert a large room into three new bedrooms on our Inpatient Unit, so we can provide palliative and end of life care for more local people with complex health needs.

Our hospice’s 20-year-old kitchen and café have also been refurbished with the grant. An adjoining open-air courtyard has been converted into a bright, comfortable atrium so our patients’ families, staff and volunteers have more space to meet and eat.

Opening our atrium and launching our strategy for 2026-29

We held a special 20th anniversary event at North Court Road on Tuesday 23 June, to officially open the atrium and launch our new strategy.

John Sweeney, the Vice Chair of Trustees at Farleigh, welcomed over 40 guests, including the MP for Chelmsford, Marie Goldman. He talked about the recent developments at the hospice before the ribbon to the atrium was cut by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Lady Vanessa Watson.

Then our Chief Executive, Michelle Kabia, spoke about the financial pressures that Farleigh is currently facing, like many other hospices across the UK, before launching our ambitious new strategy for 2026-29.

This was followed by a talk from Richard Groborz, who has motor neurone disease, and his wife, Moira about the support they have received from Farleigh over the past 18 months. This includes pain management, physiotherapy, advice on home adaptions and help to source specialist equipment, so Richard can continue working and remain as active as possible as his symptoms develop.

Afterwards, our guests enjoyed delicious food cooked by the catering team at the Broomfield Village Care Home and some went on a tour of the Inpatient Unit to see first-hand the difference that Farleigh’s compassionate care and support makes.

Thank you to our supporters

Michelle Kabia said, “We are incredibly grateful to all of our supporters who have been so kind and generous to Farleigh Hospice over the last 44 years and particularly during our 20 years in Broomfield. It was a pleasure to meet some of them at our anniversary event and be able to share the recent improvements to our hospice and our exciting plans for the next three years.”
