Ann was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) just as she and her husband Peter were planning retirement. She was referred to Farleigh Hospice for specialist support.
From her experience as a nurse, Ann knew her condition would change over time and chose to access Farleigh’s MND service early.
Peter said, “I always associated Farleigh with end of life care, so my first thought was why is Ann being referred now? I wasn’t aware of all the services and support that they offer or the helpful advice they could give us on what resources are available as Ann’s needs change.”

Farleigh’s occupational therapy team supported Ann and Peter to plan ahead and adapt their home as her mobility changed.
Peter said, “We were trying to work out how we could continue to live our best ‘normal’ life amongst all this… That was an emotional time for us both – there were tears.”
With their support, the couple converted their garage into a downstairs bedroom and wet room.
Peter said, “The rapid deterioration of Ann’s condition and the impact this has had on her mobility has been quite a shock but, with this extra help and support, the conversion is now complete.”
Farleigh also supported Ann to access a wheelchair and wheelchair accessible vehicle, helping her stay independent at home.
Peter said, “Ann’s electric wheelchair has been a revelation!”
Ann said, “Now, I would be a prisoner within my own home if I didn’t have a wheelchair.”

Ann and Peter also attend Farleigh’s MND peer support group, giving them space to talk openly and meet others in similar situations.
Peter said, “We can offload with Farleigh… hearing their stories has helped to put things into perspective.”
Peter reflected, “My earlier perception of Farleigh was that hospice care was about ‘booking a bed’… I realise now that it’s a totally different experience and not just a terminal situation.”
Ann said, “The best thing that has happened to us since I’ve been diagnosed with MND is being part of the Farleigh family… It’s like having a first-class ticket for this difficult journey that we’re on.”
