Andy Shakespear, a professional golfer from Chelmsford and a member of The Warren Golf Club near Maldon, has raised over £500 for Farleigh Hospice by hosting an online quiz, which took place on Thursday 16th of April.

Andy set up his golf-themed quiz on Zoom, inviting friends from far and wide, and setting up a JustGiving page so they could sign up and donate. As a professional golfer, Andy was able to offer a golf lesson with himself as the winning prize and raised £542 which he then generously donated to Farleigh Hospice.

After hosting the online quiz, Andy said “I wanted to do something fun with friends during this difficult time and I saw it as an opportunity to help Farleigh because I knew they’d need it. My dad was diagnosed with motor neurone disease last year and Farleigh took great care of him. Before that, I was always aware of the hospice, but I didn’t realise the extent of the amazing work they do across mid Essex to care for people with life-limiting illnesses until I saw it for myself. That’s why I chose to donate to them– so that I could help the hospice at this challenging time in some way.”

Alison Stevens, Chief Executive of Farleigh Hospice said “Andy and his friends’ support is greatly appreciated by Farleigh and is another shining example of how our local community is using their ingenuity and creativity to raise money for the hospice from the safety of their own home. It’s thanks to our community we can continue to provide care to people in mid Essex with a life-limiting illness, as well as support the NHS as best we can throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.”
