Cyclists will be pumping up their tyres and strapping on their helmets on Sunday 8 September to take part in Cycle for Life, Farleigh Hospices popular sponsored bike ride.

Our cycle is an important annual fundraising event for Farleigh and is also a great family-friendly event as children cycle for free.

There are three scenic routes through the beautiful Essex countryside to choose from - 20, 50 or 100 kilometres. All of them start and finish at our building in Broomfield, Chelmsford.

The shortest distance is ideal for beginners or families with younger cyclists and the 50km route is a relaxed ride through all eight of the Essex Rodings. The longest 100km course is more challenging, going through the Rodings, the picturesque villages of Thaxted and Finchingfield and then following 35km of the 2014 Tour de France route. It is ideal for very experienced and professional cyclists but not suitable for under 18s. Cyclists receive a free t-shirt plus a finisher’s medal.

It costs £20 for the 20km ride and £30 for the 50km and 100km rides if you book online by 4pm on 5 September. On the day prices are £30 to cycle 20km and £40 to cycle 50km or 100km. Under 18s cycle for FREE but do need to be registered and all under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Alison Pegrum, from Chelmsford, is a Practice Educator in Farleigh’s Education Team. She will be at the start line of the 100km route with her sons, Josh (age 21) and Tom (age 23), and their friend. Alison and Josh will be sticking very closely together for the entire distance, as they are sharing a tandem bicycle.

Alison explained, “My husband, Stephen, and I started riding a tandem bike before our boys were born. When they were both very young, we added a trailer and, as they got older they would be on the back seat as the ‘stoker’.

“I really wanted to ride our tandem again. When I asked Josh if he would join me on Cycle for Life, he agreed to cycle 100km on the proviso he would be at the front as ‘captain’ this time as he is the strongest rider - so I’m the stoker at the back now. We’ve been training and it was a bit tricky at first but we are now communicating and working together better.

“Cycle for Life is a fun event to take part in and a great way to support Farleigh Hospice. Once my other son, Tom, heard we had signed up, he decided to take part too, along with our friend, Vivi. All four of us are getting sponsored and will be raising as much as we can for Farleigh.”

Farleigh Hospice is very grateful to everyone who takes part in Cycle for Life and to all of the people who kindly sponsor them.
